Meal Prep- Week 34 and 35 of 2019

Let’s use this blog to talk about failure and food. These past two weeks have been filled with a lot of failure when it comes to making meals. And it all started with a dinner dish that didn’t go quite as planned. Now, I’ve seen this girl on instagram make this amazing sounding meal a few times now, but I guess I’ve really never paid attention to how it’s executed.

When I decided to make it, I thought to myself “what like it’s hard?” Now you are probably wondering, what was it? Tell us already girl, get on with it. It was Zucchini Raviolis. This is where the zucchini acts as the pasta with the filling inside. Sounds simple enough right? Sounds like it would look and taste awesome right?

WRONG. I mean I was so excited for these too! Like super jazzed, like a kid on Thanksgiving waiting for mom to hurry up with the pies. I took pictures of the process and everything. And then, I pulled them out of the oven and tried dishing it onto the plate.

And they fell apart. The zucchini unwound itself and the meat and cheese plopped on the plate and the sauce had become runny due to the excess water in the zucchini. It looked like a huge mess. Needless to say I felt a little defeated. It was a shame feeling that I feel a lot in my life. I failed at making this dish. The thing felt like a disaster. It didn’t even taste all that good. I went to my room and sat on my bed for a moment feeling very overwhelmed. I know it sounds silly, but that’s life sometimes. For every 5 good meals, there’s 1 bad meal. It’s called balance and I knew that then and know that now, but in that moment I couldn’t help but feel like a failure.

Part of that feeling, no matter how hard I tried to shake it off came with me into the next week. Meal prepping didn’t happen due to an extremely busy and somewhat jarring weekend. The failure of the week before had attached itself to me for the following week. Boy was it not ready to let go yet. But then this magical meal above and an event that will later be featured on this blog turned it all around. Just because you fail, make a mistake, take a wrong turn, doesn’t mean you can’t keep moving forward. It doesn’t mean you can’t get backup and try again. That’s the cool thing about food too. Just because something doesn’t taste good or doesn’t turn out, doesn’t mean you should stop cooking or just eat TV dinners or go out to eat. Learn from it and keep cooking. You’ll be glad you did.
